About Color Contrast
Color contrast measures how clearly text stands out from its background. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define a contrast ratio that ranges from 1:1 (no contrast) to 21:1 (black on white). The ratio is calculated from the relative luminance of each color.
WCAG level AA requires a ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text (18pt or 14pt bold). The stricter AAA level requires 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text. Meeting these thresholds keeps your content readable for people with low vision or color deficiencies.
